Senator Russell - A Short Number Of Weeks Ago

Senator Russell and his top aide, Derrick David Pmensk, a former medical student, made the limousine trip to Johns Hopkins kidney transplant center late on a Friday afternoon.

Dr. Ankrit Kaviraj, understanding that he was meeting a high-ranking government official, agreed to see him after hours at the very end of the day. Owing to the seriousness of his condition, Senator Russell wanted to make certain no one knew he was being examined for a life-threatening illness of his kidneys. Russell knew all too well the influence structure in D.C. If as much as a hint of his potential demise were to become known, numerous power seekers would swoop in and take advantage of all that Senator Russell had spent the last thirty-plus years building. Even if he were to die, he wanted to have the final say in who took over the reins of his empire. But now, today, he was thinking about the possibility of a miracle as Doctor Kaviraj entered the treatment room.

“Senator Russell.”

“Doctor Kaviraj.”

The men shook hands and the doctor’s gaze shifted to Derrick.

“He is my aide. He’s a former medical student.”

Doctor Kaviraj nodded politely but did not speak directly to the senator’s underling.

“Senator Russell, I have both good news and bad news for you regarding the kidney transplant you require.”

A ray of hope rose up as Senator Russell heard there was at least some good news.

“Yes?”

“Your genetic testing was very informative. The good news is it told us exactly the specifications of your requirements to have a successful transplant. Now we have some very specific parameters to deal within.”

A smattering of hope swelled in Russell’s chest. For a brief second he dared to believe that death was just a little less imminent.

“Good,” replied Russell. “That’s great news.”

“Yes. The trouble here is that the specific parameters limit the number of people with whom you are compatible. I see that you list no living children or first or second cousins.”

“That is correct.”

Russell’s mind went directly to Zeb and maybe, a one chance in a million maybe, to another man. For the moment he would keep the fact that he had one living son, and possibly two, a secret.

“You possess a rare gene that is non-compatible with over 97% of all the billions of people who are currently alive.”

Doctor Kaviraj read the puzzled look on Senator Russell’s face.

“Do you know your family history?”

“Of course.”

“Are you aware that you are 3% Native American? It appears that you possess a rare gene that is found only in Navajo lineage.”

Except for his great-great grandfather’s days in the South Dakota Black Hills gold rush, no family member had lived outside of Arizona or married outside the White race. Old family photographs showed his great-great grandfather with a darker skinned woman whom the family always referred to as his maid.

“No, I am not,” replied Senator Russell. “I have to assume with a finding as rare as that you doublechecked the test results?”

“Of course, we did, Senator Russell.
